Nursery Tragedy: Woman Charged with Manslaughter Over Toddler’s Death
A 22-year-old woman has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter after the heartbreaking death of a 14-month-old boy at a Dudley nursery.
Kimberley Cookson, a former nursery worker, faces serious allegations following the death of toddler Noah Sibanda at Fairytales Day Nursery on 9 December 2022. Noah was rushed to hospital but couldn’t be saved.
Nursery Boss and Company Also Face Charges
The nursery’s director and owner, Deborah Latewood, 54, has been slapped with a charge for failing to meet general duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act. The nursery company itself, Fairytales Nursery Limited, faces corporate manslaughter and health and safety breach charges.
Fairytales Day Nursery has now shut its doors amid the scandal.
All three defendants will appear at Dudley Magistrates’ Court on 13 May.
Devastated Mum Pays Emotional Tribute
Noah’s mother, Masi Sibanda, described her little boy as “handsome, beautiful, cute” and “very easy-going.”
“I know parents are biased, but he was so beautiful,” she said. “We would find him just chilling with his arm behind his head.”
The tragedy has rocked the Dudley community, sparking a full investigation by West Midlands Police and the Crown Prosecution Service.
CPS Confirms Charges and Calls for Fair Trial
Malcolm McHaffie, head of the CPS’s Special Division, announced the charges and sent his condolences to the family:
“Following a review of evidence from West Midlands Police, we have authorised criminal charges relating to the death of a 14-month-old child at a Dudley nursery. Our thoughts remain with Noah’s family at this difficult time.”
He warned that criminal proceedings are now underway and urged media and public to avoid prejudicing the trial with irresponsible reporting or online comments.
