Man Shot Dead by Police After Thetford Car Crash

Norfolk police opened fire on a man following a crash in Thetford, sparking a serious investigation. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is now probing the fatal shooting.

Deputy Chief Constable Dave Marshall described the case as “very serious” and confirmed a man has died. “I understand the public wants answers,” he said. The force is fully cooperating with the IOPC, handing over bodycam footage, 999 calls, and drone videos for a transparent investigation.

  • 8.25pm, Sunday 28 December 2025: Police respond to a two-car crash near Thetford’s cemetery gates on London Road.
  • Witnesses see a man fleeing the scene carrying a handgun.
  • One vehicle, a Mercedes van, is badly damaged and empty; the Honda Jazz involved has side damage. Its driver suffers minor injuries but refuses hospital treatment.
  • The armed man heads towards Sainsbury’s, then walks north along the A11 near Brandon Road roundabout.
  • Armed police confront the man on the southbound A11 carriageway and shoot him at close range.
  • Despite emergency efforts, the man dies at the scene. His family have been informed.

Road Closures Hit A11 Following Shooting

The A11 was closed both ways after the incident. Northbound lanes reopened by 2.30pm Monday 29 December, but one southbound lane remains shut indefinitely as police continue their investigation and cleanup.
