Massive Police Clampdown Seizes Knives, Drugs, and Cash Across London Roads

In a major three-day blitz last week, the Met led a crackdown targeting high-risk criminals ferrying weapons and drugs across London and surrounding counties. Over 1,200 officers from seven forces—including Thames Valley, Hertfordshire, Surrey, Sussex, West Midlands, and British Transport Police—joined forces to hit gangsters using major roads and railways to move their deadly cargo.

Eyes on the Roads: ANPR and Intelligence Target Criminals

Police armed with cutting-edge ANPR technology and vital intelligence zeroed in on vehicles linked to violent crime. The operation focused on key transport arteries: the M25, A406, M1, and A40, among others.

  • 179 arrests for knife crime, drugs, robbery, and more
  • 30 knives and weapons confiscated
  • 40 drug busts
  • 66 vehicles seized
  • £5,700 cash taken off the streets

Seven Forces, One Mission: Tackling Violence and Exploitation

The massive effort was spearheaded by the Met’s Violent Crime Taskforce, with backup from Met Intelligence, the Dog Support Unit, Roads and Transport Policing Command, National Police Air Service, and more. Even Special Constables pitched in.

“This operation was a joint effort between seven police forces, sharing proactive intelligence and enhancing existing relationships to target those involved in drug, gang and weapon-based violence,” said Superintendent Emma Gulczynski, who oversaw the cross-force action.

“From Birmingham to the south coast, forces worked closely to crack down on criminals exploiting the transport networks for their illegal activities,” she added.

Protecting the Vulnerable While Taking Down Criminals

Operation officers stressed they are not just removing weapons and drugs but are also focused on shielding vulnerable people from exploitation. Some suspects arrested were using children and vulnerable adults to further their crime.

“We remain committed to working with partners to identify at-risk individuals and provide them with comprehensive support,” Superintendent Gulczynski said.
