Violence Erupts at Epping Protest as Hundreds of Police Swarm the Streets
A peaceful protest outside Epping’s Bell Hotel exploded into chaos on Thursday night. Over 380 officers from Essex Police, the Met, and Hertfordshire Constabulary were rushed in after violence broke out around 8pm.
Protest Over Ethiopian Asylum Seeker’s Arrest Turns Ugly
The demonstration started calmly, sparked by the recent arrest of an Ethiopian asylum seeker accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old schoolgirl. But tensions soared when police issued a Section 39 dispersal order to clear the crowd.
Instead of dispersing, some protesters launched bricks, bottles, sticks, road signs, and cones at officers. The scene quickly descended into disorder with injuries reported and property damage mounting.
Riot Gear and Specialist Units Deployed to Restore Order
Specialist public order units from the Metropolitan Police Tactical Support Group (TSG) and the Commissioner’s Reserve were called in urgently. Officers arrived decked out in full riot gear to regain control of the volatile situation.
Neither the Met nor Essex Police have released full statements yet, but formal updates are expected soon.
What started as a peaceful protest ended in mayhem, leaving Epping residents shocked and police stretched to their limits.
