Boris Johnson has unveiled a clear roadmap to end the UK lockdown, contingent on four key tests: the vaccine rollout, vaccine effectiveness in reducing hospitalisations and deaths, infection rates, and the emergence of new variants. The government will proceed in five-week phases, allowing at least four weeks to collect and assess crucial data before easing restrictions further.
March 8: Pupils Return to School and Two-Household Outdoor Meetings Allowed
Schools and colleges will reopen for face-to-face lessons. University students who require practical or on-site work can return to campuses. Additionally, two people from different households will be permitted to meet outdoors.
March 29: Rule of Six Outdoors and Sports Restart
Up to six people from different households can meet outdoors, including in private gardens. Two households may gather together even if the total exceeds six people. Outdoor sports such as golf, football, and tennis will be allowed to resume.
April 12: Shops, Gyms, Beauty Services, and Holidays Resume
Non-essential retail shops, gyms, and beauty salons will reopen. Domestic holiday lets will be allowed for household groups. Pubs and outdoor dining will return without the requirement for a ‘substantial meal’ when consuming alcohol. Zoos, theme parks, and public libraries will open for visitors. The government will also publish a review on international travel.
May 17: Indoor Gatherings and Hospitality Fully Reopen
Indoor socialising will be permitted for up to six people or two households. Pubs, restaurants, and bars will open indoors. Theatres, cinemas, and sports stadiums will reopen with social distancing and capacity limits in place.
June 21: Final Review on Social Distancing and Club Reopenings
The government will review plans to remove social distancing and legal limits on social contact. High-risk venues such as nightclubs may reopen if it is deemed safe to do so.
Caroline said, “It’s been such a tough start to the year and I know we’re all eager to get our lives back to normal as soon as it’s safe to do so. I’m delighted that based on the four tests the PM has set out, including the continuation of the successful vaccine rollout and monitoring any new variants, we will see our society and economy reopen over the next few months. Most importantly, we should soon be able to see those we love.”
Vaccine Numbers and Effectiveness
The Prime Minister announced that the government aims to offer every adult in the UK a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of July. Currently, one in three adults have received their first dose. New data indicates that the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine reduces hospitalisations by 75% after just one dose and helps prevent deaths. The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine also provides strong protection, although more data is needed to fully assess its overall effectiveness.
