A 37-year-old British backpacker, Rory McColl, could face up to five years in a Thai prison after being caught taking a woman’s phone by mistake in Bangkok. The incident happened on Khaosan Road during the first night of his 12-day trip when he picked up a smartphone he believed was his. The owner, 22-year-old German national Melina Muchow, spotted the phone was missing and reported it to bar staff, who reviewed CCTV footage and identified Rory as the person pocketing the device.

CCTV Shows Phone Pickup

Lieutenant Noppasin Piyarat confirmed there is clear CCTV evidence showing Rory taking the phone and putting it in his pocket. Security staff then found the phone in Rory’s possession and confirmed its ownership after the victim successfully unlocked it. Rory was detained at the scene and police were called.

Intoxicated Suspects Outburst

At the police station, Rory, described as ‘blind drunk’, was given a chance to apologise, which could have resolved the matter. Instead, he verbally abused Melina and her friends, making offensive gestures and insults. The victim insisted on pressing charges, which led to the case being sent to prosecutors.

Legal Consequences Loom

The accused now faces a possible jail term of up to five years for ‘theft at night’. Lieutenant Piyarat explained that while Rory’s intoxication may have contributed to his behaviour, the language and actions were severe enough to prompt legal action.

Warning For Tourists In Thailand

This case serves as a stark reminder that Thailand’s legal system is strict, particularly when alcohol and disrespect are involved. Unlike the UK, incidents may quickly escalate to incarceration, highlighting the importance of understanding local laws and behaving responsibly while abroad.
