A tragic incident occurred on the M4 motorway in Berkshire this afternoon when a minibus overturned, resulting in the death of a child and serious injuries to several passengers. The single-vehicle crash took place at approximately 2:40pm on Sunday, May 11, between junction 11 (Reading) and junction 10 (Wokingham) eastbound.

Emergency services responded rapidly with six ambulances, five critical care units, air ambulances, police, and fire crews attending the scene. Thames Valley Police confirmed the fatality, stating, “Sadly, a child died in the collision and our thoughts remain with the family who are being supported at this extremely difficult time.” Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue and Thames Valley Air Ambulance were also involved in the response. Several passengers with serious injuries were transported to hospital for treatment.

National Highways announced significant closures on the M4 today due to the incident. The eastbound carriageway is closed from junction 11 (Reading) to junction 10 (Wokingham), while the westbound side is shut between junctions 8/9 (Maidenhead) and 11. Additionally, a separate vehicle fire between junctions 7 and 8 westbound has contributed to traffic disruptions.

Traffic congestion has extended over three miles, with delays estimated between 30 and 50 minutes. The situation has been exacerbated by broken-down vehicles in the area.

Thames Valley Police have urged drivers to avoid the affected sections of the motorway. They advised, “We would ask motorists to continue to avoid the area. The closure is likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future.” Diversions are in place, causing additional congestion on surrounding routes including the A329M, A308M, and A404M.

Authorities are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who saw the crash or has dashcam footage is asked to contact Thames Valley Police on 101, quoting incident 884 (11/05).

The tragedy has prompted renewed calls for stricter safety regulations on group transport, particularly when children are passengers. Local councillors have expressed condolences and offered support to the families affected by this devastating event.
