Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) has been recognised as one of the UK’s top fire services following a comprehensive inspection by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS).
The latest HMICFRS report praised KFRS for its excellent performance in protecting the public from fires and other risks. The service received a ‘good’ rating for both effectiveness and how it supports its staff, alongside an ‘outstanding’ rating for efficiency.
The breakdown of the ratings includes:
- Effectiveness: Strong emergency response capabilities and public protection measures.
- People: Robust support for employees and volunteers.
- Efficiency: Exceptional management of public funds, resources, and equipment.
The report also highlighted a positive working culture within KFRS, noting that senior leaders act as role models who promote the right values. Staff members feel empowered and confident to raise concerns, which fosters continuous improvement across the service.
Ann Millington, Chief Executive of KFRS, expressed pride in the results: “I’m pleased and very proud that an independent body has assessed our performance in this way. Our teams worked extremely hard to raise the bar and were awarded ‘outstanding’ overall for efficiency, as well as in other areas such as culture and risk understanding.”
She added, “While this is a positive report, it is critical that we continue to improve and develop the services we provide to everyone. We are constantly striving to do more and be better.” Millington also praised the dedication of the workforce, saying, “Every member of KFRS genuinely cares and wants to do the right thing. They are committed to saving lives.”
Nick Chard, Chairman of Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority, celebrated the success: “I’m delighted that Kent Fire and Rescue Service is among the top performing fire services in the UK following its HMICFRS inspection. This is the result of the team’s hard work and dedication, working together across Kent and Medway to save lives and provide a service to be proud of.”
His Majesty’s Inspector of Fire and Rescue Services, Roy Wilsher, also congratulated KFRS, stating, “Kent Fire and Rescue Service understands risk thoroughly and prioritises accordingly, demonstrating very innovative and clear planning.”
