Light Aircraft Crashes onto Busy A419 Near Stroud
A light aircraft plummeted onto the A419 this afternoon, sparking a major emergency response including the Great Western Air Ambulance. The crash happened near Aston Down Airfield in Frampton Mansell, between Cirencester and Stroud, around 4:45pm on Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses Describe Harrowing Nose-Dive
Onlookers said the powered glider suddenly stalled mid-flight before nose-diving straight onto the busy road. One witness said, “It looked like it stalled and nose-dived into the main road.” The shocking scene caused immediate panic among drivers.
Miracle Escape: Occupants Suffer No Serious Injuries
Despite the dramatic crash, the two people on board reportedly avoided serious injury. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but the air ambulance was stood down shortly after reaching the site, suggesting the situation wasn’t as grave as feared.
Gloucestershire Constabulary confirmed road closures while emergency teams worked to secure the scene. “There were two occupants on board who are being assessed by ambulance crews. No other vehicles were involved,” said a police spokesperson.
A419 Shut Both Ways, Delays Expected
The A419 is closed in both directions between Cowcombe Hill and Emmerson Lane, causing heavy traffic chaos. Drivers are urged to find alternative routes while the crash site is investigated and cleared.
Officials have yet to determine the cause of the crash, with aviation authorities preparing a full inquiry. The incident has raised alarm given Aston Down Airfield’s busy use by gliders and light aircraft in the area.
Authorities Continue Investigation
Emergency services remain on scene assessing damage and clearing wreckage. The public is advised to avoid the area and watch for updates from local authorities about road closures and investigations.
