Emergency services are currently tackling a major fire at Hackney Synagogue located on Belize Terrace. The incident began just before midnight and involved a large response from fire crews, ambulance services, and police.

Witnesses described thick flames engulfing the new synagogue building. The fire is believed to have started in the towel room before rapidly spreading through all three floors of the structure.

Firefighters worked urgently to save valuable Torah scrolls, successfully removing them amid the intense blaze. The London Fire Service confirmed that 15 fire engines and approximately 95 firefighters and officers were deployed to the scene.

The fire caused severe damage to half of the basement and ground floor, as well as part of the first floor of the synagogue building.

Station Manager Nicola Lown explained the challenging conditions faced by the crews, stating, “The ground floor partially collapsed into the basement, creating hazardous conditions. Two fire rescue units used specialist equipment to shore up the floor. This allowed crews to wear breathing apparatus and reach the fire in the basement safely.”

The fire was brought under control by 6:53am. Firefighters from various north London stations, including Stoke Newington, Tottenham, Homerton, Hornsey, and Holloway, responded to the emergency.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
