This call comes after a tragic incident in Cambridge where a family died in a flat fire that was likely caused by a charging electric bike. Gemma Germeney, 31, along with her children Lilly Peden, 8, and Oliver Peden, 4, lost their lives in the fire. Another man remains in critical condition.

Francesco Mazzella, the CEO of Talio, a manufacturer and seller of e-bikes in the UK and Europe, emphasized the need for safety in e-bike purchases. He highlighted the affordability factor that leads many people to buy cheaper bikes online, despite the potential risks associated with such products. Import controls on batteries are being called for, particularly for those purchased online from countries with less stringent safety regulations.

Instances of battery-related fires have been reported, with e-bike batteries causing rapid and intense room fires. Dell Williams, who experienced an e-scooter explosion at his home, stressed the importance of understanding the potential dangers and taking precautions. Fire chiefs are also cautioning about the risks of overheating batteries and the high intensity of fires they can cause.

Experts are expressing concerns about the increasing prevalence of lithium-ion batteries and the lack of sufficient knowledge about the associated risks and hazards. Paul Christensen, the director of Lithiumionsafety, highlighted that incidents involving these batteries extend beyond e-bikes to various devices such as e-cigarettes and grid-scale battery storage systems. Overcharging, overheating, and manufacturing defects are among the factors contributing to battery-related incidents.

The Bicycle Association is urging consumers to purchase e-bikes from reputable brands and retailers, while also warning against buying from overseas sellers on online marketplaces. These recommendations aim to promote safer choices and reduce the risks associated with unregulated batteries.

With the rise in incidents involving batteries, it is crucial for the government to consider implementing subsidies for safe e-bikes. This would not only enhance consumer safety but also promote responsible purchasing practices and encourage the use of reliable and regulated products.
